Turkey’s 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation was carried out in response to Greece’s fascist coup attempt for Enosis on 15 July 1974. Based on the rights and authority granted by the 1960 Guarantee Agreement, the Peace Operation aimed to protect Turkish Cypriots who had been forcibly expelled from the founding equal partnership of the Republic of Cyprus since 21 December 1963.

During the period between 1963 – 1974, they endured inhumane sieges with 103 villages occupied and looted, hundreds killed and forced to live in open-air prisons in 3% of the island under hunger, poverty and deprivation.

The operation saved the Turkish Cypriot population from absolute genocide, toppled fascist coup agreements in Cyprus and Greece, preventing Enosis and preserving the island’s independence.
